Ingredients
2 tablespoons Land O Lakes® Butter
4 medium (4 cups) onions, thinly sliced
1 teaspoon kosher salt
4 ounces cream cheese, softened
4 ounces (1 cup) Land O Lakes® Sharp White Cheddar Cheese Chunk, shredded, divided
14 cup sour cream
2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon chopped fresh thyme
18 teaspoon pepper
1 oz (2 tablespoons) Land O Lakes® Aged Italian Blend Fine Cut Shredded Cheese
Chopped fresh chives, as desired for garnish
How to make
-
STEP 1
Melt butter in large sauté pan over medium heat; add onions and salt. Stir to combine. Cook, stirring occasionally, 35-45 minutes or until onions are deep golden and caramelized, being careful not to burn them. (You may need to add water, 1 tablespoon at a time, if onions become too dry.) Remove pan from heat.
-
STEP 2
Meanwhile, in medium bowl, mix cream cheese, 3/4 cup Cheddar cheese and sour cream until fully combined.
-
STEP 3
Heat oven to 375°F.
-
STEP 4
Stir Worcestershire sauce, thyme and pepper into caramelized onions to deglaze pan. Add onions to cheese mixture; stir to combine. Transfer to baking dish; top with remaning Cheddar and Aged Italian cheese.
-
STEP 5
Bake 15-20 minutes or until cheese is melted and dip is bubbling lightly around edges. Garnish with chopped chives.
Tip #1
If desired, broil this dip after baking for 1-2 additional minutes for deeper golden crust.
Tip #2
Serve this dip with a crusty baguette or your preferred cracker.
Tip #3
Use any leftover dip as a sandwich spread for a roast beef sandwich or a burger topper.
Tip #4
Since the onions take a considerable time to caramelize, try making a double or triple batch, then cool and freeze the extra amount for future recipes.
