1 cup Land O Lakes® Butter softened
1/2 cup powdered sugar
1/2 cup sugar
1 large Land O Lakes® Egg
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
Decorator sugars, if desired
Heat oven to 375°F.
Combine butter, powdered sugar and 1/2 cup sugar in bowl. Beat at medium speed, scraping bowl often, until creamy. Add egg and vanilla; continue beating until well mixed. Add flour, cream of tartar and baking soda; beat at low speed until dough forms a ball.
Shape dough into 1-inch balls. Place 2 inches apart onto ungreased cookie sheets. Flatten to about 1 1/2 inches with bottom of glass dipped in sugar; sprinkle with decorator sugars, if desired. Bake 7-9 minutes or until edges are lightly browned. Let stand 1 minute on cookie sheet; remove to cooling rack.
If cookies spread too much, chill dough about 1 hour.

Very disappointed in this recipe as written. The most glaring omission is salt. And there's not enough extract (it should be doubled). Without these changes, the cookie is very bland. The balls of dough need to be rolled in sugar prior to placing them on the pan, and it took a full 10 minutes to bake these in my accurate oven. I liked the texture and the ease of not having to roll out the dough, but I would not make these again without the changes I mentioned above.
No, I made as is and didn't like the recipe. Next time I will add 1/2 tsp. of salt and increase the extract to 1 tsp. I also will roll each ball in sugar first, then press down with glass.
I've been making these for nearly 20 years! They're absolutely the best sugar cookies to ever make!

This year make some classic sugar cookies for the holidays. They are simple to bake and perfectly sweet. It’s no wonder recipes like our Butter Toffee cookies are so popular - there’s no better way to say it - they really take the cake!
