Ingredients

1 1/2 cups sugar

1 cup Land O Lakes® Butter softened

2 large Land O Lakes® Eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla

2 teaspoons freshly grated orange zest

4 1/3 cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

1 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 cup sour cream

Decorator sugars

How to make

  1. STEP 1

Combine sugar and butter in bowl. Beat at medium speed, scraping bowl often, until creamy. Add eggs, vanilla and orange zest; continue beating until well mixed.

  2. STEP 2

Combine flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt in another bowl. Beat at low speed, adding flour mixture alternately with sour cream and scraping bowl often, until well mixed.

  3. STEP 3

Divide dough into thirds; wrap in plastic food wrap. Refrigerate at least 2 hours until firm.

  4. STEP 4

    Heat oven to 400°F.

  5. STEP 5

Roll out dough on lightly floured surface, one portion at a time (keeping remaining dough refrigerated), to 1/4-inch thickness. Cut with 3-inch cookie cutters. Place 1 inch apart onto ungreased cookie sheets. Sprinkle cookies with decorator sugars or bake plain.

  6. STEP 6

Bake 6-9 minutes or until edges are lightly browned.

Tip #1

Store these cookies in a container with a tight-fitting lid. Add a small piece of bread or an apple slice for even softer cookies.

This has been my go to sugar cookie recipe for 10 years. For those who complain about the spread & losing shape, it is a soft cookie recipe, it will spread. If you want a crisper cookie that hold small details, then you need to find a different recipe. I find the cookie sweet enough, but I always ice mine with royal icing (my husband actually says they are a bit too sweet for him). Overall we really like a soft cookie & this one has been perfect for us, I get many compliments & requests for this cookie. I do not add the orange.
